Family Therapy

Family therapy helps improve communication, strengthen relationships, and resolve conflicts within families. It provides a supportive environment where family members can express their thoughts and feelings, understand each other better, and develop healthier ways to interact. Whether dealing with parenting challenges, life transitions, behavioral concerns, or ongoing tensions, therapy fosters connection and resilience. Using evidence-based approaches, we work with families to create positive, lasting change, helping them navigate difficulties and build stronger, more supportive relationships.

Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a specialist intervention for families with young children (2 ½ - 6yrs) that focuses on reducing serious behavioural issues, improving parenting skills, and enhancing relationships. Getting in early is the key to preventing further escalation of behavioural and emotional concerns!

PCIT uses a concrete, skill-based approach to teach parents and children new and positive ways to relate to each other. Parents learn how to encourage positive behaviour as well as effective discipline strategies tailored to their child’s behaviour and temperament. In each session, the parent and child play together in one room while the PCIT therapist coaches the parent through an earpiece from a separate room. The therapist helps the parent practice and master new skills.

Live coaching helps discover what you are doing well; new skills develop quickly as they are practiced in the moment with therapist support; and you receive immediate feedback about strategies to manage your child’s challenging behaviours.

PCIT usually takes 12-20 one hour weekly sessions. PCIT is divided into two phases:

  • Phase 1: Child-Directed Interaction

The focuses is on Relationship Enhancement (improving the quality of the relationship between the parent and the child). Secondary to this, we are selectivity targeting difficult behaviours that requiring some shaping into a more prosocial opposite.

  • Phase II: Parent-Directed Interaction

The second phase of PCIT concentrates on establishing a structured and consistent approach to discipline.  We shape compliance first before tackling some disruptive behaviours that are more difficult to manage with requests.

Who can benefit from PCIT?

PCIT is a treatment designed for children aged 2 ½ to 6 with disruptive behaviours and/or emotional difficulties and their families.

PCIT has been helpful for family struggling with difficulties such as:

  • Noncompliance

  • Defiance

  • Stubbornness

  • Power struggles

  • Temper tantrums

  • Having difficulty staying seated

  • Having difficulty playing quietly

  • Having difficulty with social skills

  • Parent-Child attachment difficulties

  • Children who are verbally or physically aggressive

  • Hyperactivity

  • Chronic child behaviour problems

  • Child abuse or neglect

  • Some behavioural features associated with ASD
